Walk in the Park Fundraiser

A Walk in the Park is a fund raiser for the Cole Harbour Parks and Trails Association and the Cole Harbour Rural Heritage Society. Funds will be used to support operations at the Cole Harbour Heritage Farm, the Cole Harbour Heritage Park (CHHP) and the Salt Marsh Trail. All funds raised for this event will be split 50/50 between the two groups.

This event is a fun family and community activity. Choose your route and set your own pace. Participation is the important thing but friendly competition to see who can raise more funds is encouraged. Routes vary from 1 Km (Jerry Lonecloud Trail) to 13.5Km (full length of the Salt Marsh Trail).

Where: The walk will be conducted either in the CHHP with optional start point for the Park trails at the Program Building (256 Bissett Road) or on the Salt Marsh Trail (806 Bissett Road). There will be information stations and guides along all the routes to add to your fun on the walk.

As an incentive, people who raise and collect at least fifty dollars ($50) will be offered a one-year membership in both organizations.

A walk in the Park or on the Salt Marsh Trail will form the basis for a “Hike-a-thon” style fund raiser. No racing for glory just a pleasant couple of hours in some of the finest fall scenery on either side of the harbour. The only competition we want to see or encourage is who can raise the most funds. Registration and sponsor sheets will be available on the websites (www.CHPTA.org or https://coleharbourfarmmuseum.ca/) in the near future, or you can register at the registration sites.

Stations in the Park – These will provide some interesting stops to learn about the Park and the Salt Marsh. Details are still being worked out but could include the local birdwatchers and the Halifax Field Naturalists

The important thing is to get out and enjoy the autumn air. Routes will vary according to the enthusiasm of the participant, and you can pick and choose any of them or make up your own route in the Park or length on the SMT:

The Jerry Lonecloud trail. From the buildings around the first loop 1km walk small hills

The big loop – from the buildings along the Panorama trail to the Poor’s farm road and up the Heritage Trail back to the buildings

Registration site at 806 Bissett Road Three lengths on the SMT

To the picnic table on the near edge of the salt marsh and return 2.2 km

b.

To the far side of the salt marsh and return 7.8km

c.

To West Lawrencetown Road and return 13km

We can use your help to make this a great event. Some areas of help include:

•

On the day- crewing registration desks membership tables and on the various routes as way finders

•

Helping us out with graphics that could be used on promotional material (posters, PSAs, social media and websites)

•

Assistance on using Social media to promote the event.

•

Providing information kiosk ideas

Participants are expected to get sponsors to contribute to the fund raiser and to collect the funds for submission to either the CHPTA or the CHRHS. The funds will be shared equally by the two groups. Due to the nature of the event (sponsored funding), income tax receipts cannot be issued.

You can submit the funds:

a. the day of the event at the registration desks (cash or cheque only);

b. by e-transfer to either group noting that the funds are for the Walk in the Park. This can be done at any time but no later than 20 October 2024.

c. As a purchase at the Cole Harbour Rural Heritage Farm gift shop (https://coleharbourfarmmuseum.ca/shop/) in increments of $10.00

d. By cheque mailed to the Cole Harbour Heritage Farm Museum, 471 Poplar Drive, Cole Harbour NS B2W 4L2

Important information

The walk is in a provincial park. Other people will be present. Remember to say Hello.

All surfaces are compacted crusher dust and some routes have moderate slopes. Good footwear is suggested

All dogs must always be on a leash and under control

Water, sunscreen, and bug repellent will be supplied (limited quantities). Please bring your own water bottle.

A sponsor sign-up sheet is provided.
