SUMMARY:Mainland Common Loop Official Ceremony and Walk
DESCRIPTION:Halifax North West Trails Association will host an official opening ceremony and walk at 2 PM on Sunday\, January 26\, 2025\, at 210 Thomas Raddall Drive in Halifax. This civic address marks the entrance to the new trail connector of the Mainland Common Loop trail system. The ceremony will officially open the newly completed\, formalized 300-metre section of trail that connects the BMO Soccer Centre parking lot to the existing Mainland Common Loop trail. Local elected representatives have been invited to mark the occasion. The project’s purpose was to formalize pre-existing paths and construct a wider trail to improved usage standards. The work was completed by Association volunteers using materials purchased through a Halifax grant approved for new trail construction. The work followed a pre-approved plan developed by the Association and funded by Halifax in past years. This plan remains active and represents a longer-term mission to expand the network of trails in the area. The new trail section\, already widely used by walkers\, joggers\, and bicyclists\, represents one year of volunteer work and approximately $4\,000 in materials. Volunteers used wheelbarrows and shovels to manually transport and spread over 75 tons of gravel and rock aggregates.Following the ribbon cutting\, Association Board of Directors members will lead a guided walk on the new trail section and connecting paths. Everyone receiving this message is invited to attend with friends and family. We look forward to seeing you at this New Year event.

SUMMARY:Riverside Trail Snowshoe Bioblitz
DESCRIPTION:The Southwest Nova Biosphere and Middleton Recreation are partnering to bring the Snow Shoe Bioblitz to the Riverside Park. This family-friendly event invites community members to learn about biodiversity in Southwestern Nova Scotia using the iNaturalist app.\nWe will meet at the trailhead by the parking lot at 11:00 am on Saturday February 21st. We will explore the trail and photograph as many winter plants as we can see. A prize will be available for the attendee with the highest number of species uploaded to iNaturlist at the end of the walk. This data will be incorporated into the “Best Buds Bioblitz” on iNaturalist. For more information on the bioblitz\, check out the beginners’ guide on our Facebook page.\nMiddleton recreation offers free equipment rentals including cross country skis\, walking poles\, and snow shoes. Attendees are encouraged to reach out to mpal@town.middleton.ns.ca to reserve snow shoes for Saturday morning.\nMiddleton’s “more green time\, less screen time” initiative wants to see community members enjoying the great outdoors. Let’s use our screens to get outside and enjoy nature by learning plant identification with the iNaturalist app. To participate\, you should have the app downloaded before you arrive. Make sure to dress warm and have your equipment ready for 11:00 am.\nIf the weather makes the trail unsafe for the walk\, we will reschedule for 11:00 am on Sunday\, February 22nd. If there is insufficient snow\, we will enjoy a regular walk.
