SUMMARY:Bowater Trail-O
DESCRIPTION:An 8 hour orienteering trail ‘O’!?! \nThat’s right! Come on out and try a different kind of trail running race! This is a bigger course\, so we’ll require everyone to have at least 1 teammate this time around (must be within earshot of your teammate at all times during the event). \nRegistration: https://raceroster.com/events/2024/84946/bowater-trail-o \nThis is a fundraiser for our local food bank with 50% of the entry fee going to them! Let’s give them a helping hand! \nA “Trail-O” (Trail Orienteering) can be described as: \nan event that requires beginner-level navigation skills\, but unlike most other forms of orienteering\, it involves little\, or no\, route choice. It is conducted primarily on trails\, logging roads\, etc versus the typical on and off trail nature of an orienteering event. \nThis year\, the entire course is a ~35km loop\, but it has a few more options for route choices. Can you do the whole loop in 8 hours? Maybe\, but maybe not…so plan accordingly. It’s 100% fine and dandy to plan for a few controls and call it a day as there is no obligation to complete the course! \nIf you do bite off the entire loop\, you’ll have to do 2 bushwhacks that are in the 500m to 800m range each. The route choice is totally up to you and you’ll get your map as soon as you’re checked-in on race day (hint hint: be there early to have more time to plan 🙂 \nAround the loop\, there will be orange/white orienteering flags (AKA: controls) hanging at various intersections\, off-trail and out of sight\, so you’ll have to wander 10-20 metres (or more) into the woods to find them. Each control has a unique ‘hole punch’ hanging from them\, which you use to punch your provided ‘punch card’ (example: if you’re at control/checkpoint #251\, you punch box 251 on your card). \nThe control locations will be circled on your provided map\, along with directions for their exact location from the intersections (example directions: 20m at 90 degrees from the intersection circled on the map). \nOn the map\, the loop will be fairly obvious\, but the loop is not marked with anything but the hidden orienteering controls. \nMap and compass skills are very handy to have in your back pocket as a trail runner\, so come on out and see what it’s all about. GPS is allowed\, but it’s not in the spirit of the event to use it for navigation (unless it’s an emergency of course). \nTime limit: 8 hours. \nScoring: 10 points per control. For every minute you are late\, you lose 10 points. \nMandatory gear: fully charged phone\, compass\, matches/lighter\, knife\, small 1st aid kit\, jacket\, buff/toque\, food and drink. \nThe start/finish location will be emailed out to everyone a few days before the event\, but it won’t be any more than 20 minutes away from last year’s start/finish area (but could be a lot less too 😉 It’s not the location listed on this page\, I can assure you of that 🙂 \nPlease note: No refunds or deferrals\, but you can sell your spot to someone if you can’t make it.

SUMMARY:Grain Moon Night Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this free moonlight walk on the Jitney Trail\, August 19th. Register to let us know you will be part of this experience. The Grain Moon is a time described\, in some Indigenous teachings\, to store up what you need for future. This will also be a “supermoon” when the full moon is in perigee\, the closest it comes to earth in its orbit. This makes the moon appear larger in the sky.

Funds will be used to support operations at the Cole Harbour Heritage Farm\, the Cole Harbour Heritage Park (CHHP) and the Salt Marsh Trail. All funds raised for this event will be split 50/50 between the two groups.\n\n\n\nThis event is a fun family and community activity. Choose your route and set your own pace. Participation is the important thing but friendly competition to see who can raise more funds is encouraged. Routes vary from 1 Km (Jerry Lonecloud Trail) to 13.5Km (full length of the Salt Marsh Trail).\n\n\n\nWhere: The walk will be conducted either in the CHHP with optional start point for the Park trails at the Program Building (256 Bissett Road) or on the Salt Marsh Trail (806 Bissett Road). There will be information stations and guides along all the routes to add to your fun on the walk.\n\n\n\nAs an incentive\, people who raise and collect at least fifty dollars ($50) will be offered a one-year membership in both organizations.\nA walk in the Park or on the Salt Marsh Trail will form the basis for a “Hike-a-thon” style fund raiser. No racing for glory just a pleasant couple of hours in some of the finest fall scenery on either side of the harbour. The only competition we want to see or encourage is who can raise the most funds. Registration and sponsor sheets will be available on the websites (www.CHPTA.org or https://coleharbourfarmmuseum.ca/) in the near future\, or you can register at the registration sites.\n\nStations in the Park – These will provide some interesting stops to learn about the Park and the Salt Marsh. Details are still being worked out but could include the local birdwatchers and the Halifax Field Naturalists\n\nThe important thing is to get out and enjoy the autumn air. Routes will vary according to the enthusiasm of the participant\, and you can pick and choose any of them or make up your own route in the Park or length on the SMT:\na.\nRegistration site at 256 Bissett Road\na.\nThe Jerry Lonecloud trail. From the buildings around the first loop 1km walk small hills\nb.\nThe big loop – from the buildings along the Panorama trail to the Poor’s farm road and up the Heritage Trail back to the buildings\nb.\nRegistration site at 806 Bissett Road Three lengths on the SMT\na.\nTo the picnic table on the near edge of the salt marsh and return 2.2 km\nb.\nTo the far side of the salt marsh and return 7.8km\nc.\nTo West Lawrencetown Road and return 13km\nWe can use your help to make this a great event. Some areas of help include:\n•\nOn the day- crewing registration desks membership tables and on the various routes as way finders\n•\nHelping us out with graphics that could be used on promotional material (posters\, PSAs\, social media and websites)\n•\nAssistance on using Social media to promote the event.\n•\nProviding information kiosk ideas\nIf you can help\, please contact the undersigned.\n\n\nParticipants are expected to get sponsors to contribute to the fund raiser and to collect the funds for submission to either the CHPTA or the CHRHS. The funds will be shared equally by the two groups. Due to the nature of the event (sponsored funding)\, income tax receipts cannot be issued.\n\n\nYou can submit the funds:\na. the day of the event at the registration desks (cash or cheque only);\nb. by e-transfer to either group noting that the funds are for the Walk in the Park. This can be done at any time but no later than 20 October 2024.\nc. SUMMARY:Hike the Coxheath Colours and Ceilidh
DESCRIPTION:RAIN OR SHINE\, IT’S GOING TO BE A GREAT TIME!\n\nJoin us in celebrating the splendour of the fall colours and the breathtaking scenery at one of our flagship annual events: “Hike the Coxheath Colours and Ceilidh.” Everyone is welcome at this official Celtic Colours event! Free of charge but donations always welcome.\n\nGame plan: Throughout the afternoon\, there will be musicians and wildlife experts situated along the trail\, storytellers in the Cabin\, and a Ceilidh in the hall at the bottom of the trail. Self-guided hiking all day\, guided hike at 1:00 pm from the Secondary Entrance. A free taxi will be running from 1-4:00 pm to transport hikers between trailheads\, ie. hike in one direction and get taxi’d back. CBU will have their Science Lab at the Main Trail\, Keep Coxheath Clean and others will be present along the trail or (in case of rain in the Community Centre).\nRain plan: Hiking in the rain is beautiful and the colours that much more alive! We recommend the Secondary Entrance to begin your hike if it’s wet and the main entrance has a steep incline and is more challenging when the ground is wet. All other activities will take place in the Community Centre.\n\nThere will be oatcakes\, cookies\, hot apple cider\, tea available for nominal fee\, as well as an Even Split draw (cash only).\n\nHope to see you there!
